Bay Centre, and Airport — Victoria, BC

Celebrate the stunning beauty of the Universe on a spectacular journey through 13 billion years across the evolving Universe. In 2009 two exhibits of dazzling space images will take place in Victoria as part of International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009), a joint project of UNESCO and the International Astronomical Union. Four hundred years after the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei, “From Earth to the Universe” exhibits will take place alongside special events all over the world, from Chile to Mongolia. “From Earth to the Universe” (a cornerstone project of IYA2009), known by its acronym FETTU, seeks to connect new audiences to the beauty of astronomy through events held in non-traditional venues such as public parks and gardens, airports, art museums, shopping malls and metro stations. In Victoria, there will be two such outstanding venues for the FETTU exhibit, The Bay Centre (February 1-28) and Victoria International Airport. In addition to stupendous photographs of space created by international and Canadian astronomers, both professional and amateur, works by visual artists who have been inspired by the cosmos and artwork by Greater Victoria school children will be included. FETTU is one of many IYA 2009 special projects including 100 Hours of Astronomy, The Galileoscope, She Is An Astronomer, Dark Skies Awareness and Portal to the Universe. Music of the Spheres – education concerts by the Victoria Sympho$

University Centre — Victoria, BC

This concert celebrates the International Year of Astronomy and the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s amazing discoveries of the universe through his newly invented telescopes. Once upon a time, it was believed that the sun revolved around the earth. Galileo started the progress of discovery leading to our understanding today of the billions of galaxies that exist in the Universe and the more than 200 planets that revolve around other stars like our sun right here in our own galaxy! Many composers have been inspired by the wonders of the Universe. In fact, just as in astronomy there have been many discoveries in the world of music! Did you know that it was once believed that each planet had its own harmony? Join Tania Miller as she brings together the exciting discoveries of astronomy and music as we go on a journey to explore the Music of the Spheres! This concert will teach the audience about Galileo and the exciting world of astronomy while exploring the wonderful music that was inspired by the Universe. These concerts are booked through the school system, but offer opportunities for interactions with amateur astronomers * Victoria, University Centre: Feb. 25, 11 am and 1 pm Grades 4-7 Feb. 26, 11 am and 1 pm Grades 4-7 Feb. 27, 9:30 and 11 am Grades K-3
